Day 21: New York on My Mind

The thunderstorms came and went overnight but by morning had mostly fizzled out. This resulted in a cloudy day with stunning hints of blue sky peaking through.

Hiked on to Harriman State Park which had an enticing network of trails. The AT was only one of many paths in the park. It took me through a rock formation called the "lemon squeezer". After venturing through the tunnel

the squeeze part became obvious.

It may be difficult to tell but the gap in the rocks is taller than a person and too narrow to go through with a pack. I had to take mine off and carry it above my head while walking sideways.

After this I saw some fearless deer, I was not their first human observer.

I then passed the William Brien Memorial Shelter which had an interesting rock construction.

Onward up to Black Mountain with my first view of New York City's skyline!

Leaving Harriman State Park I entered Bear Mountain State Park and climbed Bear Mountain.

Atop was another view of the NYC skyline and the Hudson River. Unfortunately the road meant a lot of tourists crowding the place so my visit at the top was short.

Made my way down to the Bear Mountain Inn where I met Luscious for a walk through the trailside zoo. The AT goes right through this zoo. It was fun to follow the blazes through such a manmade environment.

We had a late lunch / early dinner at the Bear Mountain Inn Cafe and said goodbye. I had reservations at the nearby Bear Mountain Bridge Motel run by Grandpa. A tiny place but showers and laundry were provided and that's what I needed.

After getting all the cleaning done I had a slice of pizza and a cannoli at the local pizza joint. Can't beat the hiker hunger, so I might as well let it take me on food adventures.
