Stayed up way too late the previous night. I was looking at logistics and ensuring my phone was backed up properly (just in case). So I let myself sleep in until 8, had a snack bar, packed up, and planned to get going.
Unfortunately my plan was foiled by the rideshare situation. Grandpa used to have someone he could call to give hikers rides back to the trail, but he doesn't any more. It took over an hour to get a ride. Eventually I got hiking around 930, an embarrassingly late start.
The trail went over the Hudson river and then up past a few state parks. After that it was rural woody hills; frequently seeing houses and crossing roads.
I did get to stop at a gas station about 6 miles in for my real breakfast.
Hiking was a lot of the "climb every pile of rocks" approach NY has taken so far. No real views, but I did spot a fun sign.
When I reached Fahnestock State Park the scenery improved with many streams and small ponds scattered along the trail.
Eventually I arrived at Canopus Lake which the trail goes around up to a beach.
While the lake is closed for the season, they did have a hiker shelter nearby. I decided to tent there due to the bugs.
After the sun had gone down Luscious showed up! We had not coordinated but I guess this is just a logical stop. I said hi but went right back to bed since it was past hiker midnight.
Hiker Midnight is sundown. After this time its courteous to be quiet and ideally in bed for the night. This is especially important when sharing a shelter.
Today I exceeded 400 miles on the trail!
