Day 24: Hike Out

Completed: 448 mi
Today: 18.7 mi
Remaining: 725 mi
Hiking Progress Bar

Fairly warm in the morning, around 15°C. Made getting started easy. I chatted with Blue over breakfast. We are both engineers so plenty of shop talk. Maybe I'll get to see him again in a few weeks if I hike fast enough.

Hit the trail southbound. A beautiful day for hiking with bright blue sky and nice white clouds.

Today I finished New York state, but since I was hiking south towards the train station I crossed the border in the opposite direction. Still glad they had a sign for me to celebrate at.

Spring is finally making some progress. Today I noticed a lot of leaves on trees, which really cuts back the sun hitting me when I walk. This is much appreciated as it keeps me a bit cooler.

The Wiley shelter had a little free library out front. Pretty well stocked for being in the middle of the woods!

The last leg of the walk passed through some wide open pastures. While pretty, the grassy walk was tick central. I found at least 4 large ticks on me after this short bit of trail. Good thing I'm looking frequently.

Back at the AT railroad station I walked over to a Malaysian food truck for fried tofu and noodles.

As I finished my meal none other than Otter walks up to order lunch! I briefly caught up with him. Pretty wild to cross paths weeks later, especially in such a small window of time.

My ride showed up and took me down to Pawling. The plan is to catch the train into NYC tomorrow and then another over to Philadelphia for a little off trail time.

I tented overnight in the city park which lets hikers stay for a night. The sky was totally clear and the stars were incredible.
