We all woke up with the sun, about 515. Hiked into thick fog which stuck around and was accompanied by intermittent rain all day long. The views from the mountain tops were all obscured.
The trail was wet with parts that turned into little streams and others that were just quagmires of mud. Crossed a neat wooden suspension bridge over a swiftly moving stream I'm happy I didn't have to ford.
Later came to the beautiful Little Rock Pond. I ran into treasure hunters and fishermen. This pond has quite the draw and I can see why.
One nice thing about today was that the lower temperatures and/or rain prevented the bugs from coming out. I could stop and enjoy the ponds without being bitten.
Saw some wildlife. The red efts were out in force, I saw at least two dozen. Also crossed paths with another snake.
Towards the end of the hike for the day I went over peak where the ground was almost completely covered in moss. Quite pretty.
Also encountered the White Rocks overlook, which was just fog. The side trail for it had many cairns, presumably built by hikers, sitting quietly in the forest.
Based on our conversation last night I had decided to get a ride into Rutland, VT and stay at the highly rated, local hostel. This was because the bridge closure cut off access to about 6 miles of trail, and I had no interest in road walking around it. In the morning I could shuttle to the other end of the closed section and continue on.
Arrived at the hostel and learned that it is run by a religious organization that has some controversial practices. Whoops.
Then I found out the bridge had just reopened. So much for out thinking the trail. At least I got my laundry done for the week and enough resupply to get me to the next state.
